The official start of summer

The Rays won, beating the Orioles 2-1.

Last night some thunderstorms kicked the crap out of St. Pete, so badly that Christina and I both woke up a few times after hellaciously loud claps of thunder. These are the kind that make you think you should start running from your house in a panic, until you wake up enough to realize what's going on. Otis and Suzie both came crawling into the bedroom for shelter, though I don't think we could do much to comfort them.

Florida's neat.

Time for some baseball

We're not avid baseball fans, but we try to get out a couple of times a year to Tropicana Field to watch the Devil Rays lose. Because Tampa/St. Pete isn't really a major metropolis (A Mighty Wind has yet to open here, for example), I like to get out and do those things that resemble what one might be able to do in a larger town. So baseball it is. We'll be watching the Rays lose to the Orioles tonight, I believe.

A belated happy birthday to my brother Benjamin, and a happy birthday to my grandfather, Bob.

E-mail is not designed to transfer large files

That's what I keep telling people, but the message never seems to get through. This morning one of the scientists here couldn't download any new e-mail. Imagine my (total lack of) surprise to find three messages with attachments totalling nearly 100MB in his mail file.

There is no easy solution to this one -- e-mail attachments are the path of least resistance (i.e., the one users will always take) when it comes to moving files around, and with all that info about who sent the file and when, an e-mail box makes a handy filing system too. No other file sharing method makes as much sense or is as painless, at least until your attachments start growing larger than three or four megabytes and they get lodged in the pipe between the mail server and your client.

I know, boring. But this is what I do all day. When I'm not, you know, blogging or whatever.

(Leftover) Ham I Have

Woke up Easter morning and, although we hadn't planned to do much in the way of anything for Easter dinner, decided to go buy a ham. I used AB's recipe for ham goodness and it worked just fine, although I had to substitute dark rum for the bourbon. (Easter Sunday is not the time to ask the Albertson's clerk if the adjoining liquor store is open.)

We had some folks over to help us eat the gargantuan hunk of meat, but we still have plenty of leftovers. Tonight's experiment: ham in filo dough.

I never saw it during all those afternoon re-runs of the old 1960s Batman TV show, but there it is:

Batman's pole is bigger than Robin's.

Go ahead, make the obvious joke, but seriously -- the poles they slide down to get to the Batcave: Batman's is thicker. I don't know whether to be impressed by the level of thought and detail that went into the show, or what.
