The house is almost twice the size of our apartment. For the price they're asking, it's pretty darn amazing. Hardwood floors, a spacious, funky kitchen (still no dishwasher!), and even hookups for laundry machines if we were to invest in some. I have to wonder what the catch is, although I kind of see it when I look at the outside of the place: not-so-great neighborhood (not scary, but not very nice) and an exterior that makes me cringe. Parking is in a weird little unpaved alley, and street parking is around the corner.
Still, we both thought the place was great. We put down a $200 refundable deposit and we await the results of criminal and credit checks. Our credit isn't the best, but we've been paying rent on time in our current place for the last six years, which probably counts for something. If all goes well we'll be making the move the first weekend in February.
It's weird, this is exactly the way our last move went. Six years ago, the first place we looked at seemed to be exactly what we needed at exactly the right price. I'm not thrilled about the increase in rent (and, no doubt, utilities), but the extra space we'll be getting is more than compensation.
I've got some butterflies about the rent increase and all, but I think this is a good move for us. Yes, these have been incredibly mundane updates lately, but this is what's going on.
