I'm a gwine ta be in a weddin'.

We're off to Orlando this afternoon for the buildup to Jeff and Loren's wedding on Saturday. So probably no updates until after that. The reception should be cool; they've rented out the dinosaur hall at the Orlando Science Center. The funny part is that Scott's girlfriend, Amy, hates dino skeletons. They frighten her, or something. I wanted to let it be a surprise to her, but Scott felt the urge to be chivalrous and gave her warning.

Spoilsport.

We're moving.

Maureen, the woman who showed us the house yesterday, called back this morning. We're in, and we'll go sign a lease next week. Now the moving plans begin in earnest. More to come.

Hey, Amy updated her web site! And look! On the front page! A link to her blog!

Holy cow, that was fast.

The house is almost twice the size of our apartment. For the price they're asking, it's pretty darn amazing. Hardwood floors, a spacious, funky kitchen (still no dishwasher!), and even hookups for laundry machines if we were to invest in some. I have to wonder what the catch is, although I kind of see it when I look at the outside of the place: not-so-great neighborhood (not scary, but not very nice) and an exterior that makes me cringe. Parking is in a weird little unpaved alley, and street parking is around the corner.

Still, we both thought the place was great. We put down a $200 refundable deposit and we await the results of criminal and credit checks. Our credit isn't the best, but we've been paying rent on time in our current place for the last six years, which probably counts for something. If all goes well we'll be making the move the first weekend in February.

It's weird, this is exactly the way our last move went. Six years ago, the first place we looked at seemed to be exactly what we needed at exactly the right price. I'm not thrilled about the increase in rent (and, no doubt, utilities), but the extra space we'll be getting is more than compensation.

I've got some butterflies about the rent increase and all, but I think this is a good move for us. Yes, these have been incredibly mundane updates lately, but this is what's going on.

Start saving those boxes.

Christina and I have been slowly clawing our way up the standard-of-living food chain for a while now; we're trying to make another step up soon. The lease on our apartment expires at the end of the month, and I really don't want to renew. We have a line on a rental house for about $250 more a month than we pay now, which is acutally pretty reasonable for a house in St Pete. It would be nice to actually buy a house and start building some equity, but we're not prepared for that mentally or financially. We're supposed to look at the house this afternoon; if we like it, we may be on our way to moving in a few weeks. If not, we have to make the decision to keep looking and try to find a new place while renting month-to-month at Woodlawn, or signing up for another hitch.

I'll let you know.

Meanwhile, Scott is moving out of his efficiency and into a one-bedroom in the same building. I guess he and Amy are really gonna do this thing. I have no information on when she moves down from Ocala, but it's a good sign.

Another Monday...

...another episode of Joe Millionaire. This show is so mean it's scary. I dig it the most. Terrific first dates: grape-pickin', coal-shovelin', manure-slingin' fun.

In all fairness

For those of you not numbed enough by the soothing mediocrity of your PCs to keep from taking offense at the previous quote, you can at least find some solace in the following, from the very same column:

Apple, with its still stubbornly high prices, will have a tough time defending its already tiny computer market share, while continuing to branch out into gizmos like the iPod music player.

Probably the most even-handed assessment of the current computing scene in some time. I do love the WSJ.

Well that just sums it up, don't it?

"Will a Mac work with the office network? The wireless router? The printer? Maybe, probably or likely, but for many middle-of-the-road computer users, numbed by the soothing mediocrity of Windows machines, it may be too much of a risk."

Tim Hanrahan and Jason Fry, Wall Street Journal
