Whose Cuisine...?

At the risk of sounding insensitive, I'm not going to bore you with my personal thoughts and reflections on the events of September 11th a year ago. It might be more appropriate if we, as a country, hadn't been wallowing in our own self-pity and righteous indignation for the entirety of the last year.

Christina finished up the quilt for Melanie and Mike's wedding, only a little over a year after the actual wedding. That's Scott on the right, trying not to look too bored as he holds it high enough for the photo. Click the picture for a slightly larger version.

Last night the Amazon sales ranking for the book shot up to 5750, which ain't too shabby. Once you hit the top 10,000 they start updating your ranking hourly instead of daily, so it has since dropped to 9138. This site explains what Amazon sales rankings mean in terms of actual sales. Amazon has yet to order more books from us, but it's nice to see that there are people buying the book out there.

News flash! Anna's Pasta closes its doors.

Now before you start hyperventilating, let me reassure you that the proprietors are still in the restaurant business. Anna's Pasta has consolidated with a restaurant in downtown St. Pete called Urban Ciao. Will they become Anna's Urban Ciao? I don't know, but the hand-labeled sign on the door said "Anna's After Dark." I think the Urban Ciao menu is available during the day, and they'll be switching to standard Anna's fare for dinner.

Urban Ciao is right next to the Globe Coffee Lounge on 1st Ave North between 5th and 6th Streets. They're on a limited menu right now but most of the non-baked pasta dishes are available. The waiter (Tony, who has been there for quite a while now) said that they'll be shaking up the menu a little bit, but that most of the old favorites will still be there. There appears to be less room in the new restaurant, but they claim they're only missing one or two tables compared to the old place.

Why did they move? Apparently someone offered the landlord more money for the same spot – and they plan to open an Italian restaurant there. In a particularly tacky move, the new tenants took down all the signs directing Anna's patrons to the new location. How rude. On the good side, the new location is more convenient, a lot more atmospheric, and right next to a good coffee shop. (That's it at right, with the red doors of the Globe on the left side.)

I'll tell you the story about my fortuitous stop in the coffee shop another time.

Dragon*Con 2002 wrap-up

I wrote it and posted it on the Reel Shame news page. It will be permanently archived on the "older news" pages, once I figure out what's going on with the Blogger archive for that site.

We have gotten some good responses to the book, including a link from one of the biggest entertainment news sites out there (Dark Horizons), but as yet no quotable quotes. The book has only been "out" for a week but I'm ready for some press, dammit.

We gave away between 60 and 80 copies of the book while we were in Atlanta, not in vain I hope. I keep saying to myself that the best advertising for the book is the book itself, but it's tough to keep a positive frame of mind when the Paypal account sits empty. Fortunately the Amazon sales rank keeps creeping up (54, 585 as of this weekend). If we sell every remaining copy through Amazon we will just make back our money when you figure in the publicity efforts, so at the very least our investors (the good people at Capital One Visa and The Virtual Quilt Company) will have made something from our efforts.
