Christina woke up this morning to a phone call from her boss; apparently the construction workers in her office building managed to cause massive amounts of flooding, and one of the casualties was the lab attached to her office, which holds the computers with all of her data.
This e-mail from Jyotika puts it pretty well:
Well, today's drama is that a pipe broke last night in one of the upstairs labs, and the downstairs is now flooded. The power was off earlier, but that's been re-estabilshed - don't know how long for, because some of the light fixtures are dangling by the wire, and with all this water around, it's a potentially dangerous situation. The reason why the lights are dangling, is because the ceiling gave way in some people's offices. Luckily, I'm just outside the region of damage (although I have to walk through the water to get here). Some of our lab was hit, as was Christina's lab, and the two in between. Also I hear that the upstairs (esp. the lab where the pipe broke) is a mess too. One of the profs. office is a write-off - water over his papers, computers, bits of ceiling tile all over the place. Christina is running around, trying to save things. She has a poster she was working on for today - I haven't 'waded' down that far to see how that's coming along.
So Christina has been in and out of the USGS offices today, trying to get this poster stuff finished for Gary. Fortunately the Center where I work is part of a cooperative effort with USF, so in emergencies our casa is their casa.
We're still scheduled to leave for New Orleans tomorrow, and of course Bryan has his birthday dinner scheduled for this evening, which is only appropriate as this is his birthday. But it does mean we'll be packing into the wee hours tonight.
