New toy

Handspring is having their annual Module Madness sale this week, so I picked up an eyemodule camera for about $50. It's a fun toy. Tim called it a "geek badge," and I have to agree. It should be useful for trips and stuff, plus it will be nice to have a camera on me at all times, however crappy the resolution.

Bryan mugs for the camera.

My Visor's view from my desk.

So it's not art. I'm having fun.

Not a lot to say tonight. Getting up early in the morning to satisfy the sadistic needs of Christina's advisor, who scheduled an 8:30 meeting. Hey, we get in at 9:30 and leave work around 7 p.m. every day. 8:30 is early for us.

By the way, I should have said "thank you" for the food processor. So Geoffrey, Jen: thank you.

Hi, it's me. (Who else?) Not feeling quite as glum as last night. That's the problem with doing blog entries last thing before bed – sometimes I'm jazzed about all the things I got done, and sometimes I'm depressed because I'm tired and feeling defeated. It's easy to feel like nothing is getting done when you go to bed with a bunch of unfinished projects. More than once in the past week I've gone to sleep feeling like another day had slipped away from me.

But tonight is different; I'm reconciled with my unfinished projects (a review that didn't go up, but it's almost ready) and I feel better because I took time out to exercise (trying to do that every night) and play with my cats. I got the fishing pole down for Suzie because it's her favorite, but Otis started to hog it after a while. He does that, the stinker.

I have been blessed with gifts for my kitchen lately; one is a new Kitchen-Aid food processor, given to me by my brother Geoffrey and transported here by Nicholas, who was here last week. Apparently Geoffrey and Jen got a newer, better food processor for their wedding and were passing this one on to me. Later in the week Geoffrey called to make sure I was actually going to keep it, because it was "a nice one." He needn't have worried. I could tell from the weight of the base (like a freakin' brick!) that it had a heavy duty motor. The Black and Decker processor we have is a comparative lightweight, and it's a heck of a lot noisier than the Kitchen-Aid. Frankly, the Kitchen-Aid processor is the stealth bomber of food processors. You'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.

Hey, Geoffrey: what's with the bowl attachment and the second steel blade attachment? I haven't figured those out yet.

Now I have two extra food processors. (We accepted one from Tim and Teresa, thinking that their castoff might be better than our cheapo Black-and-Decker. I haven't tested that theory yet, and likely never will now that the Kitchen-Aid is in my possession.) I need to find some needy aspiring cooks.

The other gift that came recently is a copy of Square Meals by Jane and Michael Stern. Christina's once-upon-a-time stepmom, June, sent her Christmas gifts out late this year, and it was nice to finally have a copy of my own. I remember reading the entry on milk toast in my parents' copy and thinking ugh! but now it seems kind of appealing. The Sterns are almost lyrical when they describe their favorite culinary hedonistic pleasures, which are usually the simplest of things. For example:

Milk and Honey

A sugar teat in a cup, the most soporific of drinks, milk and honey should be reserved for episodes of profoundly regressive behavior . . . .

1 cup milk
1 tablespoon honey

Scald milk. Stir in honey. Pour into cup. Assume fetal position. Drink.

Jane Stern was apparently raised in a Southern home, if one can judge by her memories of a wiry black housekeeper who spun yarns of biscuits "so light they floated off the plate" and the accompanying recipe for Coca-Cola-basted ham. This is not a cookbook for those looking to shed pounds, but it is a fascinating history of American "popular" cooking.

Particularly of interest is the Victory Dinner section, with recipes designed to meet the ration needs of the (don't say housewife don't say housewife don't say housewife) "home economist" of World War II. I think I need to make some Kitchen Patrol Carrots with dinner tomorrow night.

Yup, it's the beanbag. Mere seconds before hell broke loose. A full report with more pix and maybe even video this weekend.

For your consideration:

This is the sticker (or a screen-font reproduction of it) we'll be putting on the earpieces of the 3-D glasses. The actual size will be 1 x 1.5 inches. And yes, I measured the glasses to make sure they'll fit. I ordered 1000 of these suckers (500 = $45, 1000 = $50 – which would you choose?), so there will be plenty left over for other applications, even if we put one sticker on each of the two earpieces.

Join me in my latest dance of victory for another bureaucratic step completed.

The Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) for Reel Shame is: 2002104069.

You can even look it up in their catalog. (Use the Guided Search, not the Basic Search. The only extra step it requires is that you select "LCCN" from the pop-up menu on the right.)

We've been riding the emotional roller coaster called "tax preparation" lately; Christina keeps finding wrinkles in even the supposedly simple process that we have go through. It seems that if one partner in a married couple itemizes his taxes, the other member of the couple can't claim a standard deduction, even if they file separately. Oy. I don't know if running Stomp Tokyo as a business is such a great proposition in this case, especially since Christina doesn't have much in the way of itemizable expenses. Or at least I don't think so, since the world of Schedule A is pretty new to us. But since ST will (hopefully) be making money this year with sales of the book, we're going to keep operating under the rules for sole practitioners. Christina has been an angel, dealing with the math end of things and navigating the stupid forms like a pro. We've got our Turbotax in hand, but that only really works if you've done your organizing before you put the CD in the slot.

The book brings a host of problems I'm not ready to face, like shipping and credit card orders and whatnot. The outlook on digital postage for the Mac is predictably dismal, although there is a product called SimplyPostage that theoretically runs on the Mac. Only the barest mention of SimplyPostage for the Mac exists on their web site. Add to this the fact that Scott doesn't drive, and so the burden of the shipping these books will most likely fall to me. Great.

Ah, I see that I've been bitching for two whole paragraphs. Time to say something nice.

100 pairs of 3-D glasses came in the mail today. At $40, it was a sound marketing investment. We'll get stickers printed up with the book's title and URL on them, and stick those on the earpieces of the glasses. Then we'll include the glasses in our press kits for the book. Since we devote nearly an entire page to the history of 3-D movies in the second chapter, it will be a nice hook for the "P.S." in our cover letter and hopefully a way to make our book stick in the minds of book critics. Or maybe I just blew forty bucks.

Independent Confirmation

You're probably bored with the whole "Staples Sucks" topic by now, but I'd just like to point out that people I don't even know hate Staples too. There are a lot of them, apparently. Staples hasn't been making friends.

Type "staples sucks" or "I hate Staples" into Google and you're bound to find others in agreement.

Not much to say tonight. Trying to tidy up the last bits of the book. We're finally writing up the introduction & acknowledments. I guess that means we're really gonna print this sucker. G'night, everybody.

Return to Staples

So I braved the Staples again for my TurboTax with $10 discount. The help was absent as usual – none of the registers were manned and when I went to the customer service desk to check out, the woman at that register (let's call her Customer Service Lady) eyed me like a piece of rotten meat and called a trainee to Register One. Trainee preferred Register Two, so I guess the third time was the charm. Trainee didn't know how to enter the coupon, so she called on the original Customer Service Lady. See how it goes? Of course, CSL couldn't deal with it, so she called on Dour Manager Type to punch the five numbers that the register required. DMT took her sweet time getting there, but eventually I got checked out and ran back to the car.

I realized during this trip that it is not, in fact, a Morrison's Cafeteria next door to the Staples. It is a Piccadilly.

The customers at the front door of the Piccadilly today all looked like retired mobsters, except for the guy in the Kelly green blazer (it's St. Patrick's Day, don't ya know) and orange tie, who looked like a non-retired drunkard. But at least he wasn't wearing a purple muscle shirt underneath the blazer.

No joy on the St. Patty's Day dessert

Two Publix branches later, I still had no Famous Chocolate Wafers. My mom said to try the ice cream aisle at Publix, but neither of the stores I visited today had them. I settled for chocolate graham crackers, but I doubt they'd be the same. Not that I had a chance to try this out, because my attempts to whip cream ended in disaster. I added my creme de menthe syrup too late in the game and the whip cream fell, eventually becoming a green proto-butter substance that was entirely unlike the fluffy mint-flavored whipped cream I wanted.

Also, Christina had a bit of an accident with the green food coloring, and now her feet and my hands are stained green. Some days you just shouldn't go into the kitchen.

Christina says that our holidays this year just aren't working out on the actual days, and perhaps we should celebrate a few days late for all of them. This worked out for Shrove Tuesday – we did make some tasty pancakes a few days later. My plan is to try Albertson's for the FCWs. If I find them there, it will lend some credibility to her delayed-holiday theory.

I feel a bit sheepish posting this recipe when I can't quite make it myself, but here goes:

1 cup heavy whipping cream
creme de menthe syrup
green food coloring
1 tablespoon sugar (if you like your creme de menthe sweet instead of sharp)
1 box Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers (if you can find them)

Chill a stainless steel or copper bowl and the beaters for your hand mixer. Pour cream into bowl and start beating with the hand mixer at a low speed. When you see a good number of frothy bubbles, give it the gas. Turn that hand mixer up to whip and start adding the creme de menthe (to taste, but a few tablespoons ought to do it) and a few drops of green food coloring for the holiday mood. Whip until you've got a nice thick whipped cream. Don't overdo it, or you'll end up with the proto-butter mess I mentioned above.

You can chill this in the bowl for about an hour, or if things are still pretty cold, you can start layering the cream between the wafers right away. You can usually stack about 4 wafers with a tablespoon or two of cream between each before things get unstable. A small dollop of cream goes on top of each stack.

Chill for 30 minutes or more and serve after your traditional Irish dinner. Or stuff your face now before your friends and family get any. Let your conscience be your guide.

A quick shout out to Lisa, who is dealing with some rather nasty wounds she received on Friday night. I'm sure she'll describe it all in her own blog, but for now please join me in wishing her a speedy recovery.
