No Macworld Expo this year
The hammer came down today: due to this year's budget crunch, my annual trip to New York for the Macworld Expo has been cancelled. Whom do I blame? That's a toughie. It would be easy to say that it's the fault of the Republican administration or the "war on terrorism" or even the lousy economy, particularly in the technological sector. That would be a bit too easy. The more likely reason is that our little center is growing faster than the bureaucracy can adjust, and our already meager IT budget was spent on things like printing supplies instead of training. Why didn't printing supplies come out of the office supply budget, you ask? The answer is complicated and depressing and I'm not even going to get into it. It's a government thing, you wouldn't understand. Even I don't understand.
The worst part of not going to MWE isn't even the lack of a boondoggle, missing the annual trip to Joe's Shanghai, or even losing out on the thrill of getting up at 4 a.m. to get in line for Steve Jobs' keynote speech. The worst part is that I always came back from New York jazzed about my job. I was ready to start all kinds of cool new projects to make work more fun and life easier for the users I support. It recharged my batteries. I don't know where that's going to come from this year.
But hey, fuck me and my crying in my beer over a trip to New York. Did you hear about the great book I wrote with my pal Scott? It's coming out in September, and it's gonna be great.
