Christina spent the day getting her bed rest, or love seat rest as the case may be. Our fabulous new love seat came in yesterday, replacing the futon frame that so marked our living room as Modern American Dorm Room. The futon's still here behind the couch, ready to do duty on the floor for those hapless souls who might want to crash at our place, but the frame has found a new home in pal Bryan's new apartment. We still haven't seen said apartment, but we'll get there. Word has it he's moved into a small four-apartment complex, the other three apartments of which are occupied by "hot single women." He described it as quite like moving into a sitcom.
Christina's illness (a persistent throat tickle and the occasional couch-rattling cough) comes at a particularly bad time: this week she's trying to get projects finished for Gary, who is off to a conference in France next week. Next weekend we're going to New Orleans, and we'll both be really unhappy if Christina is still coughing up lungs at that point. So today featured plenty of water, vitamin C drops, and a full disc's worth of season 3 episodes of "Sex and the City." I knew that was a great investment. The picture above was taken immediately after the couch's arrival on Saturday -- there were neither houseguests nor pictures taken today. Notice that Suzie has immediately laid claim to a spot on the new furniture.
The couch is too fluffy, fabulous, and large to be just a love seat -- the phrase brings to mind images of teenaged couples in the '50s stuffed into the rumble seat of a jalopy. This is one jumbo love seat, and it's probably the first piece of furniture we've owned that I could describe as "fabulous." Suzie approves. The arms are just her size. Otis hasn't really taken to it yet, although he did hide under a nearby chair for a while after its arrival.

The web site business continues to throw us curves; our host told us that beginning in June, we'd be charged for extra bandwidth (the amount of data leaving our web site on its way to other places) over a certain amount. Given our current rate of transfer, we'd be looking at a $200 charge at the end of June. This being the case, we're considering jumping ship to a cheaper, no-frills web host and discontinuing portions of the site. Barry's Temple of Godzilla may be an unfortunate casualty of bandwidth "pirates" -- people who link to our images for their own purposes without regard for the expense it creates. It's depressing, but the ripples of the big burst of the Internet market bubble continue to be felt. So, like any Internet company, we cut back and focus our efforts on the core business.
This is an unwelcome distraction during the time when I should be gearing up for the book launch. I managed to Express Mail a press kit and book to the Times-Picayune, but I haven't sent galleys to anyone yet, and I really need to get those out of here. Guess I've got some work ahead of me this week before we leave for the Big Easy.
