Spent the evening cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and pantry. Very cathartic. There was stuff stored on the top of the fridge that really shouldn't have been there. Stuff that goes up that high goes out of sight and gets forgotten and eventually becomes home to a colony of things we don't want living in the house. I've also heard that refrigerators are more energy-efficient if they don't have stuff stacked on top of them.
I tossed the stupid rotating spice rack we got for a wedding present. Five years it sat up there and I think I unscrewed maybe three of the little jars. I can't imagine that dried spices that sit that long can add much in the way of actual flavor -- and I haven't yet seen a recipe that calls for majoram. At least not in the kind of thing I'm likely to cook, anyway.
I started this little log as a place to jot down good cooking ideas and to remind myself of what works and what doesn't. Hopefully those of you who read it will get some amusement or enjoyment out of it, too. I'll be sure to link to recipes -- which hopefully I'll be putting up in the Holland family cookbook -- and include comments.
I've had some interesting recent experiences as I really start to get into the cooking thing; I'll be catching up on those, probably as I try those recipes again. Recent holiday, uh, dining experiences have made me really want to bone up on how to properly cook certain dishes. I don't want anyone leaving my house thinking that of my cooking.
